The Two-Edged Sword

In class # 8 we learned how to use Inductive Reasoning to examine Bible texts with the word “butter” to determine their Physical meaning as well as their Spiritual meaning.

In Class # 9 we are going to use Inductive Reasoning again to examine the phrase “Two-Edged Sword” and see if we can “discover” its Spiritual meaning as we “compare Scripture with Scripture

1. Use Inductive Reasoning

Many texts of Scripture, which apply to the subject being studied, are examined in order to draw a general conclusion based on the harmony or agreement of all the many texts studied.

2. Think about each text first as to the Physical meaning and then apply the Spiritual meaning of the Real Objects in the verse.

Example: Bible study of the “word” Two-Edged

A) “Word”: Two-Edged

B) Strong’s Concordance lists the following texts in this order:

1. Psalm 149:6 3. Hebrews 4:12

2. Proverbs 5:4 4. Revelation 1:16

C) There are only four places in the Bible where the “word” Two-Edged is used. We will write out the full text as given in the Bible and then think about each verse to discover the most important fact that each verse is revealing about the “word” Two-Edged. Then we will write our conclusion in our own words.

D) Now we will go back and look at the story that the “word” two-edged has told us: two-edged sword = the Bible

1. The Bible is to be in our hand.

2. The Bible will end the power of the false church.

(Because we will see the truth)

3. The Bible is the two-edged sword.

(It is our powerful weapon to overcome evil)

4. The Bible has come from the mouth of Jesus Himself.

(We can trust what Jesus has told us)

We have just learned that the “two-edged sword” represents the Bible.

Why do you think the Sword has “Two Edges?

What is this telling us about the Bible?

(Note: to prove this a study of the word “edges” should be made)

Now, let’s look at a Bible verse that speaks of a “Strange Woman” who “meets her end” by the “Two-Edged Sword”.

The Strange Woman

Bible verse:

Proverbs 5:3,4

“For the lips of the strange woman drop as the honeycomb

and her mouth is smoother than oil:

But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword”.

2. Locate KEY WORDS in the verse : 3. Discover their SPIRITUAL MEANING :

(usually nouns or “real things”) (by using the BIBLE WORD PICTURES)

The Strange Woman

Bible verse: Proverbs 5:3,4

“For the lips of the strange woman drop as the honeycomb

and her mouth is smoother than oil:

But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword”.

4. REWRITE THE VERSE: (Substitute the Spiritual Meaning of the Real Objects back into the Bible verse and Paraphrase the verse to discover what God is saying to us Spiritually!)

(strange)

The words (lips) of the ______________________ (woman)

“as the”

sound like ________________________________ (honeycomb),

(but they are not)

and her voice (mouth) sounds like

“smoother than”

the _________________________________________ (oil):

(but it is not)

But her end will be bitter as she

is ________________________________________ (wormwood)

(two-edged)

by the ______________________________________ (sword).

Spiritual Implication

So, the Bible warns us that there will be

False Churches

that will counterfeit God’s Words

and even counterfeit His Holy Spirit!

The Bible also tells us how to tell if the Church is a

False Church – by judging it by the Bible itself!

In other words, to Compare

the teachings of the Bible

to

the teachings of the Church.

Note: 1

If the teachings of the Church are different from the Bible, they are false teachings and it is a False Church.

Note: 2

No one believes they attend a False Church, yet many people do according to the Bible.

Each of us should “check out” the Church we attend and be sure its teachings agree with the teachings of the Bible!
