Using our Bible Study “Tools

Things you can do to help you understand the Bible

1. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you as you study.

2. Read the verses in the Bible and determine:

a) What you understand.

b) What you do not understand.

3. Use Strong’s Concordance to look up all the words you do not understand.

4. Write a Paraphrase of the Bible verses in your own words.

(This will reveal whether or not you understand the verse Literally).

5. Determine the “Context” by reading the verses around your study verses.

6. Determine the “Key Words” in the verses you are studying.

(“Key Words” are usually Real Objects but they can be any word that the Bible writer uses repeatedly or in such a way that it is obviously important),

7. Think about the Functions of the Real Objects.

8. Think about the Physical meaning of the Bible verse.

9. Determine the Spiritual meaning of the Real Objects by using the Bible Word Pictures Reference Booklet or a Concordance.

10. Think about the Spiritual meaning of the Bible verse.

11. Substitute the Spiritual meaning of the Real Objects into the Bible verse and Paraphrase it to give the Spiritual meaning of the Bible verse.

12. Compare “Scripture with Scripture” by looking up the “Key Word” or Key Phrases in the verse using a Concordance.

13. Look at “Parallel Passages” of Scripture or other places in the Bible that the same parable or story is given by a different Bible writer and compare the similarities and the differences.

14. Summarize what you have learned and draw your Conclusions.

15. List the Doctrinal truths you have learned.

A Bible verse will be analyzed using our “tools”.

Eccl.11:1 “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days”

1. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you as you study.

2. Read the verse and determine:

a) What you understand.

The verse tells me to throw bread on the water.

b) What you don’t understand.

How will I find the bread many days later?

3. Use Strong’s Concordance to look up words you do not understand.

cast #7971 send away, sow, put forth

bread #3899 food (bread)

from #3898 to feed on (to battle, make war, over come, prevail)

4. Write a literal Paraphrase in your own words.

Take bread and throw it on water and you will find it many days later.

5. Determine the Context by reading the verses around your study verse.

:2 “Give a portion to seven…”.

:3 “Clouds full of rain.. empty themselves upon the earth..”.

:6 “Sow thy seed.. withhold not thy hand…”.

The context is “giving

giving a portion…

clouds giving rain to the earth

sowing or giving seed to the earth

The Physical context:

is Physically giving or feeding the earth

The Spiritual context:

is Spiritually giving or feeding the earth

6. Determine the Key Words (Real Objects) in the verse.

Key Words: bread, waters, it (bread)

(…….) (……….) (……)

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days”.

7. Think about the Functions of the Real Objects.

Bread  provides Physical nourishment.

Waters  provides a Physical environment for fish.

8. Think about the Physical meaning of the verse.

Throw (Physical) bread on (Physical) water and then find the (Physical) bread many days later.

9. Think about the Spiritual meaning of the verse.

Throw (Spiritual) bread on (Spiritual) water and then find the (Spiritual) bread many days later.

10. Determine the Spiritual meaning of the Real Objects by using the Bible Word Pictures Reference Booklet or a Concordance.

Bread = God’s Word (the Bible) Mat.4:4

Bread = Jesus (the bread of life) John 6:35

Waters = people Rev.17:15

11. Think about the Spiritual meaning of the verse.

(BIBLE) (PEOPLE)

Take (Spiritual) bread to the (Spiritual) waters and many days
(JESUS)

later you will find the (Spiritual) bread.

12. Substitute the Spiritual meaning of the Real Objects back into the Bible verse.

(BIBLE) (PEOPLE) (JESUS)

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days”.

13. Paraphrase the verse in your own words.

a) Take the Bible to the people and many days later you will see Jesus.

b) Take Jesus to the people and many days later you will see Him.

c) Take the Word to the people and many days later you will see the Word made flesh (Jesus).

14. Summarize what you have learned and draw your Conclusions.

Jesus wants me to teach others the Bible.

I need to “give” what I have learned Spiritually to others that know less than I do.
